Charity Commission shares lessons of
compliance work
The Charity Commission has recently published a
detailed report highlighting real-life examples of
problems that are being faced by charities that the
Commission has dealt with over the past year.
'Charities Back on Track' is designed to help charities
avoid experiencing the same difficulties. The report
covers good governance, fighting fraud, fundraising,
vulnerable beneficiaries, tackling the threat of
terrorism, and disputes and explains how the Commission
dealt with them.

Working
with Local Strategic Partnerships and Local Area
Agreements
This study explores the relationship between four
New Deal for Community (NDC) partnerships and their
Local Strategic Partnership (LSP), and what impact if
any this has on the Local Area Agreement (LAA). It
assesses the extent to which each influenced the other,
identifying what helped and what hindered the
development of the relationship, concluding with a
summary of the implications for both policy makers and
practitioners. Click here to

Planning Bill loophole
LACORS,
which oversees councils' environmental protection work,
has written to Local Government Secretary Hazel Blears
expressing concerns that thousands of people will
lose the right to complain about noise, pollution or
disruption caused by the construction of major
infrastructure projects under proposals set out in the
Planning Bill. Council leaders are warning that the
controversial clause would silence local opposition to
new building projects via the back door.

Major boost for housing design
quality
Local authorities are being urged to assess the
design quality of all new housing schemes against
Building for Life standards after they were endorsed by
government.
The Building for
Life standard is included in the government's
updated annual monitoring report guidance for local and
regional planning authorities. Each housing scheme will
be assessed against the 20 criteria, which are jointly
promoted by CABE and the Home Builders Federation, the
industry body representing the major residential
developers. |

Charity donations fall as demand for
services grow
Results of a survey released by the Charities Aid
Foundation (CAF) and the Association of Chief
Executives of the Voluntary Sector (acevo) suggests that
the effects of the slowing economy is starting to
have a huge impact on charities.
If your charity is suffering from the slowing
economy, why not look at raising money
online with the Charities Aid Foundation and the
online donation service it provides.

"I
love exploring buildings!"
Hundreds of thousands of people shared the sentiments
of Civic Trust
President Griff Rhys Jones, and took advantage
of a record 3,717 places and events taking part in
this year's Heritage Open
Days (11-14 September). From Cumbria to Kent, over
35,000 volunteers opened properties and
gave special guided tours. Over 8,000 visitors
alone flocked to Bentley Priory, Stanmore, headquarters
of Fighter Command during the Battle of Britain.
Promoted by features on national and local BBC
television (not to mention Chinese and Japanese TV), and
articles in the Guardian, Independent, Telegraph, Daily
Mirror and the Times, Heritage Open Days 2008 was a
huge success. Thank you to all organisers
and volunteers who made the event happen. We would
love to hear how your events went and if you have
any photographs email them to kcondy@civictrust.org.uk |

MyCard
The Civic Trust launched a pilot of an exciting new
programme in Redruth last week. My Card is
a loyalty card, which encourages people to shop locally,
with the added benefit of donating to charitable causes.
Retailers in Camborne, Pool and Redruth attended a
meeting to find out more about the benefits of the
card to both shopkeepers and shoppers, and was a
definite success. The area is one of the first
in the country to launch the project, which will go
live next year, and the Civic Trust is keen to
hear from other areas who would like to find out
more. |
