On behalf of Janet Murrells, our treasurer, I would like to thank all those Civic Society members who have now paid their BCS subscriptions for 2015/16. Also, may I remind those who wish to renew their membership but have not yet done so that payment is now due. The subscription this year is £9, which covers the whole household, not just an individual. You can pay by cash, by cheque payable to Buntingford Civic Society or by internet bank transfer. For further information, contact the membership secretary, Peter Hay, at membership@buntingfordcivic.org.uk. Your membership subscriptions and the advertising revenue raised through the Buntingford Journal enable the Society to enhance the attractiveness of the Town and its surrounding area and to contribute to worthwhile projects across the community. As I'm sure you are all aware, your subscription entitles you to receive all 10 issues of the Journal delivered to your door throughout the year, but it also includes other benefits that perhaps you are not aware of, such as membership of Civic Voice, the umbrella organisation for civic societies across the country that gives us a national voice. Heritage Walks Each year, Civic Voice holds a national Civic Day which this year is on Sunday 21st June. To mark the event locally we are arranging two guided walking tours of Buntingford's Conservation Area and High Street. This will include a visit to Peel House to see the old police cells and exercise yard, by kind permission of Gillian Johnson. The tours will be led by Robin Webb, with a maximum of 15 people on each, and are FREE for BCS members; non-members £1 per head, payable on the day. To ensure you are not left out, book now by email to: chairman@buntingfordcivic.org.uk giving your name, address, telephone number, the number of people and whether or not you are a BCS member. Or you can ring 01763 271287. The tours will start at 10.30am and 2.30pm, meeting in the Coop carpark. A second attraction of the day will be an Open Day at St Bartholomew's Church, from 11am to 3pm, very kindly hosted by Martin and Mandy. This is not part of the guided walk because Layston is a little too far out of the way, but anyone who is interested should take a stroll up the Causeway. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Mandy for her superb presentation at our AGM in April on seven years spent restoring the church. Her talk was very much enjoyed by everyone there. Finally, a shortage of people and time means that with regret we have had to postpone our proposed Buntingford in Bloom competition. We wll revisit this next year in better time to get things properly organised. BCS has lost several committee members in recent months, for a variety of reasons, and would welcome some new volunteers. If you think you mght like to get involved with the Civic Society and can spare a few hours a month, perhaps a little more if involved on a project, please get in touch. Graham Waite, BCS Chairman If you have any queries about Buntingford Civic Society or issues you would like to raise, you can email the Chairman direct at chairman@buntingfordcivic.org.uk. |
